Allen's early years of artistic interest and creativity culminate in a Fine Arts Degree from the Cleveland Institute of Art. After graduation he pursued a dual career as an Industrial Designer and Fine Arts. He continued his Fine Arts education by studying with Tom Lynch, Doug Fryer, Charlie Hunter, Patrick Lee and Terry Miura.

Allen is a Cardinal Fellow of the Watercolor Society of Indiana, Signature member of the Ohio Watercolor Society, Member Artist o the Brown County Artists Guild, Hoosier At Salon and the Indiana Heritage Arts.  H has exhibited in numerous juried art shows, receiving various awards.  His work can be found in both private and corporate collections across the globe.
