Kathleen Newman, "Creating Mood and Atmosphere in Pastel"

New Harmony Gallery / 507 Church Street / 812-682-3970

Medium:  Demonstrations and instruction will be in pastel. Pastel is preferred but students may use other mediums

Level: Beginner to Advanced

Description: Kathleen will demonstrate how to interpret your photo reference to create more expressive and personal work while learning pastel techniques on paper.  Using B/W images, she will provide methods of designing strong compositions through abstract light and shadow pattern, work around the color wheel to improvise creative use of color strategies and finish with painterly techniques of layered pastel to convey mood and mystery, rather than detailed accuracy, in your paintings.  While this isn’t a plein air class, we may go outside to gather information with our sketchbooks as well as work from our own photo references.

Kathleen creates paintings inspired by her love of the outdoors and the many moods of light and shadow across the landscape, urban environment and interior settings.  She has been awarded the International Association of Pastel Artists Master’s Circle Gold Medal, signature letters in the Pastel Society of America, the American Impressionist Society, and the American Transparent Watercolor Society and is a Chicago Pastel Painters Master.
