Lyle Glen Denney was born in Muncie, Indiana, to Arvin Ray and Opal Viola (Reneau) Denney, on October 22, 1951. He began sketching while attending grade school at Mount Summit and painting with oil and acrylics while a senior in High School at New Castle, Indiana. He credits his High School teacher, William Zigler, with a great deal of encouragement toward his future as an artist. Lyle has no art education or training beyond high school but has studied the works of T. C. Steele, J. E. Bundy, C. W. Hawthorn, J. S. Sargent, J. Otis Addams, and Fritz Thalow among others in a lifelong quest to learn. He is one of the six founding members of the Indiana Plein Air Painters, and quoting his favorite artist, T.C. Steele, says, “The thing I like most is to be painting outdoors under the blue dome of heaven, when the bugle notes of color are calling and the world seems big and mysterious: a vision, half from the realism before my eyes and half from the dream in my heart.”
Much of Lyle's work has never been exhibited or seen by the general public, as it has been commissioned by collectors. His paintings are reminiscent of early Indiana work, and several are included in some of the best collections in the country.
